Lincoln Journal Star Sunday, December 16, 2007 HIGH SCHOOLS Baloghs make impact at Knight Invitational Sisters earn two firsts, one second at meet BY TOMMY DAHLK Lincoln Journal Star Lincoln Southeast's Brooke and Bobbi Balogh aren't new to Nebraska high school swimming.

But after waiting patiently for almost a year, the sisters who transferred to Southeast from Michigan last January finally got to compete Saturday at the Knight Invitational. The Baloghs made quite a debut. Brooke, who is a sophom*ore, won the 200-yard individual medley and the 500 freestyle. Older sister Bobbi, a senior, finished second to Brooke in the 500 freestyle. Brooke said she was happy to finally get a chance to compete in an invite and liked her chances of winning going into the meet.

"I had it in my mind that I might be able to win them," Brooke said. "But anything can happen, and I'm happy that I won and was able to swim." To make the day even better, Brooke earned bragging rights over her sister in the 500 free. Brooke said she won't tease Bobbi too much. "She likes when I do good," Brooke said. "Sometimes we tease each other, but it's all healthy and it helps a Since swimming is a fall sport in Michigan, the Baloghs were deemed ineligible to swim for LSE last season.

Although they couldn't compete last year, the sisters practiced throughout the season. Coach 1 Dave Peters said they've been great additions. "They are just incredible practice swimmers," Peters said. "The kinds of things we ask kids to do and constantly remind and beg people to do are their habits. They just have good, clean habits and are disciplined." The Baloghs weren't the only Lincoln swimmers who shined Saturday.

The Lincoln East boys took home the team title for the second straight year. East's 296 points betteredo West Omaha the Westside by title 91. Mil- with won girls points. The Westside girls also finished second. Coach Greg Fleming said he thought the Spartans swam great in the season's first big meet.

"We had some time drops and picked up another automatic state qualifier," Fleming said. "That helps our cause along the way. We have a lot of our team points back from last year. So we knew we were one of the better teams here." East's Sam Kiddoo, Garett Daugherty, Jon Rye and Jackson Carter won the 200 medley relay, The Spartans also finished first in the 200 free relay and second in the 400 free relay. Individually, Kiddoo placed first in the 100 backstroke.

Fleming said winning this meet gives the Spartans a lot of confidence and he hopes his team will continue to improve before state. "It's early in the season still," Fleming said. "There's still a lot of developing and training to go. We'll see what happens at the Reach Tommy Dahlk at 473-7431 or GYWNETH Journal Star Lincoln Southeast sophom*ore Brooke Balogh swims the breaststroke during the finals of the 200-yard individual medley Saturday at the Knight Invitational. Big runs help Links to victory Defense shuts down Fremont BY ROD HENKEL For the Lincoln Journal Star A young Fremont boys basketball team could not contend Saturday with Lincoln High's ability to put together scoring spurts or the Links' defensive pressure. Five players, including two reserves, scored at least eight points, and Lincoln High (3-0) used three surges to pull away for a 72-41 victory. Fremont, which started two freshmen another freshman and a sophom*ore in its seven-man rotation, dropped to 0-5. "For the most part, we played hard defensively and because of that we have the ability to get into spurts here and there," said Lincoln High coach Russ Uhing.

"To play at a little faster tempo, you need more kids." Lincoln High opened the game by scoring 14 of the first 17 points and closed the third period with a similar 14-3 run. The lead never dropped below double digits after the opening minutes, and a final 14-2 surge to end the game accounted for the final margin. Michael Partee led the Links with 14 points on 6-of-7 shooting, while Deondre Webster 13 points off the bench, including three three-pointers. Andre Granger made 5 of 7 shots for 12 points, while Josh Riser and Dylan Flinn each added eight. Riser and Pete Uhing drew the attention of Fremont's defense and finished a combined 4-of-13 from the field.

"We really tried to focus on taking Riser and Uhing out of the game and force the other kids to beat us, and for the most part we did that," said Fremont coach Mark Williams. "Give Lincoln High and the other kids a bunch of credit. They stepped up and made a lot of Lincoln High finished 26-of-47 (55 percent) from the field, while Fremont was just 11-of-33 (33 percent). Dunner 13. BOYS BASKETBALL (W)e played hard defensively and because of that we have the ability to get into spurts. Russ Uhing, Lincoln High coach "The key is shot selection," he said. "With the exception of a few threes, I thought our shot selection was pretty good. I thought the effort was very consistent throughout the game." The Tigers, who got 11 points from 6-foot-5 freshman Connor Niehaus and eight apiece from freshman Braxton Voss and junior Andy Sajevic, committed 21 turnovers.

Fremont appeared to weather the initial Lincoln High blitz, staying within 10 to 15 points throughout much of the second and third quarters. The Tigers trailed 35-24 before missing a driving layup attempt that would have cut the margin below double figures, and that's when the Links ended the third period with their second big run. Lincoln High made 7 of 11 shots in the final quarter, including a pair of three-pointers by reserve Keaton Soto-Olson, to expand the final margin. "That's what it says in the scouting report you can never relax," Williams said. "You have to constantly handle that.

For as young a team as I have, they really haven't seen that speed. It's part of the learning curve."
